Description

Ice Caves of Europa will challenge your reflexes and your mind, blending free-flowing precision flight with confronting science fiction ideas about the nature of humanity. An inquisitive flying robot exploring the hazardous caves beneath Europa stumbles upon a sinister interplanetary conspiracy.

History

Io Normal received funding from Film Victoria to develop Ice Caves of Europa in 2015. The game will release on Steam on the 10th of July 2018. Memebers of the press and streamers can contact us for Steam keys. The game's story is inspired by the writing of Iain M. Banks and Fred Hoyle. It follows the tradition of 'hard sci-fi' meaning it extrapolates from current technology but avoids magical or currently unproven ideas such as faster-than-light travel and communication, or anti-gravity. The story follows the progress of Verne, an artificial intelligence housed within a flying robot, sent to explore Europa after a comet impact has made caves beneath the surface accessible. Current theories about the nature of the Europan ice sheet suggest that, while the ocean is very far beneath the surface (perhaps up to twenty kilometers) there may be lakes, or at least slushy, warmer regions closer to the surface. In Ice Caves of Europa one of these lakes, beneath Thera Macula, experiences multiple impacts from comet fragments. The liquid water sublimates leaving caves that can be explored by the flying rover.
